The Annual Arya Vir Dal Camp (Shikshan Shivir) of the Guyana Central Arya Samaj has been held every year since the establishment of the first Arya Vir Dal Camp in Guyana (British Guiana at that time), 1956 at No. 71 Village. This camp was conducted by an Arya Samaj Missionary from India, Pt. Usharbudh Arya. At that time Pt. Arya worked under the umbrella of the The American Aryan League which was later changed to Guyana Central Arya Samaj in the 1970s.
The instruction given at these camps are instrumental in moulding young Hindus who are not only spiritually enlightened but also physically and mentally prepared to face the different facets of life. Arya Samaj in Guyana was, in those days, in it's germinal
stage. Many missionaries came from India to educate the people and further strengthen the foundation set by earlier missionaries. As time progressed, young energetic graduates from these camps migrated to the forefront of the leadership of the Arya Samaj in Guyana.
Thus, these camps were instrumental in keeping Arya Samaj alive in Guyana over the years to follow until present day. The GCAS today diligently continues to organise the Annual Arya Vir Dal Shikshan Shivirs at various locations across Guyana. Apart from the annual camp held by the GCAS, many individual mandirs and other allied groups also organise similar activities throughout the year further augmenting the tradition of Arya Vir Dal Camps.
The curriculum usually includes a mixture of physical and academic activities. Academic
instruction includes both secular and spiritual lectures (such as Vedic Philosophy, Sanskrit, Hindi, Debating, Social Topics, Scriptures and Music). Physical activities include sport activities, games, yoga and pranayama, dancing and military training.
Over the past few years camps have begun to be more focused on building an ideal vir/virangana that can function in society. Students are taught about social behaviour (How to deal with social hurdles e.g. teenage pregnancy, alcohol, suicide, addiction, drugs and sexual behaviour). They are also encouraged to build a respectable character full of honour, humility, respect, patriotism and charity. References are drawn
from the many scriptures available and are taught to the virs and viranganas in a manner that is comprehensible. Spiritual role-models from the various religious texts are highlighted and their ideals taught.
In August 2006, the Guyana Central Arya Samaj celebrated the 50th Anniversary of Arya Vir Dal in Guyana with a week of celebrations that
included the 50th Annual Arya Vir Dal Camp in No. 78 Village along with the 2nd Biennial Arya Samaj Conference in Skeldon. A special page has been created for details of the entire event.
